bissell

BISSELL has long been a household name (literally), uniquely positioned as both B2B and B2C. Their proprietary formulas and extensive catalog of cleaning devices are highly regarded, and they live out their wholesome mission of being pet-friendly through their own charitable organization. However, they felt that their app for their line of connected devices was due for an upgrade, in terms of infrastructure and design. While budgets and timelines did not allow for a full-on overhaul, we knew we could still make some meaningful improvements to what they had.
The app’s existing design was darker, heavier, and had a dated feel. Some of the font sizes were a bit small and hard to read, and some of the color contrast ratios were not up to the latest WCAG standards. It also lacked a real distinguishable visual brand presence — the logo and a few core colors were there, but where was the pet friendliness? Where was the humanity and the relatability? How might we take a mere system of controls for IoT devices and transform it into an experience that helps make a busy person’s life less messy?
We saw an opportunity to make the interface lighter, brighter, and more accessible. We also knew it was important to preserve the device controls, in addition to keeping them large, simple, and easy to use. But we also sought other opportunities for improvement, such as device scheduling and highlighting the ease and cost-effectiveness of BISSELL’s auto-replenishment program.
The device setup process was also streamlined to have fewer steps and to be more thoughtfully designed. The careful combination of illustration, photography, and copy made each step seem as quick and easy as possible.
We also leveraged a clean, simple data visualization style throughout the experience. In the history section, modern and airy bar charts allow users to track their cleaning data over certain periods of time at a quick glance. In the device home section, users can quickly see statuses of different replenishables, such as filters, brushes, and cleaning formulas, and easily set up a recurring reorder (at a discount!) with a single tap.

outcomes & roles
Our client stakeholders were so impressed by the final design of the refresh that they asked us to create the above concept for a future-state experience, which included an AI assistant, personalized product and article recommendations, and an interface tailored to pet parents.
-
Led the interface design
Established the visual tone for the app refresh and future-state concept
Provided UX assistance to another lead designer
Regularly presented to client stakeholders
-
Worked closely with on- and off-shore developers to ensure our designs, animations, and microinteractions were possible to build within our timeline and budget
Pivoted as needed to ensure timelines were honored but design quality was not sacrificed
-
Provided the product team with annotations around UI, UX, accessibility, animations, and microinteractions so design intent was clearly understood and developers could properly point tickets
Participated in sprint demos and agile ceremonies to ensure design integrity was maintained throughout the build phase
